Like many people I imagine, I thought Vancouver was on Vancouver Island. Not so. Vancouver Island is a delightful hour or so away from Vancouver city - via some of the most gorgeous scenery on the planet. The photo below left does NOT do the location credit. The photo below right was taken on the road north from Victoria, and looks back to the mountainous mainland in the distance.
We drove on and entered this quiet little fishing town that immediately captured my imagination. Cowitchan. It was like scenes I had seen in so many North Amerian movies, and nothing I had seen in Australia. Ramshackle homes and businesses hugging the water's edge, each with their own jetty and boats. It oozed character.
We decided to have dinner at this pub on the left. Typical hearty and cheap pub meals. As we left a local picked our accent and commented, " You came all the way from Australia to come to this place!" He thought we were mad to be wasting our time in such an insignificant dump. The other man's grass.......
And this was the serene view we enjoyed while we sat on the balcony and ate.
